I can’t remember when I started using Olx (formerly Sulit.com), all I know is that I have been doing purchases from their site for countless of times. Most of my purchases are beauty supplies. But recently, I visited the site to look for a tablet. I need to have a tablet because I’m going to bring my notebook PC to the service center and I won’t have anything to use to blog and go online for Skype. I have learned a lot from this purchase!
Product hunting on Olx is fun
I enjoyed browsing and see lots of cheap prices to choose from, until I stumbled across pre-owned netbooks! Bam– I’ve changed my mind! Now, I wanted a netbook instead of a tablet! The prices of netbooks are close to tablets’, so why not?! I honestly am not a tablet person, I’m limited with what I can do in tablets compare to a PC or laptops. So I go-go-go hunting for the cheapest but with better specs on olx!
I found a limited edition HP netbook, my eyes are popping with excitement! It’s pink, it’s pink! But the price was triple of my budget, specs are low, and is a Windows 7 starter version (I want an ultimate version). Never mind, I forget about it. Once again, I saw another pink netbook, but the brand was Samsung. Specs are okay, but the price was quite high and the seller takes ages before she responds, I’m discouraged. I go for another hunt and I was eyeing a black Toshiba netbook that I just found with 500G HDD, 2G RAM, and Windows 7 ultimate. The price was quite high, but that’s okay for the specs. I bookmarked it and I keep looking for another option. There I found a HP netbook, specs are okay and the price was exactly on my budget, but still, it’s my second option because I really like the black Toshiba.
Negotiating with the seller
I contacted the seller of black Toshiba netbook and get more details about the netbook she posted at olx.com. Everything was clear and specs are what I’m looking for, so I asked for a lower price. She gave a me a little discount, then I told her I’ll call her in the morning and I’ll go to Manila to check the netbook. I also called the seller of HP netbook and asked for more details, just in case the first seller failed, I’ll have another option and won’t waste my long time of travelling for nothing.
The morning has come and I travelled from Laguna to Manila for almost three hours. It’s a rainy day, but glad our meet-up was nearby the bus terminal. I’ve waited in a fast food chain and had finished eating but the seller hasn’t arrived yet. Geez, I hate waiting! She’s late and she arrived with a guy companion and another girl, they were three in total.
The product isn’t same as advertised on Olx!
The first time my hands laid on the Toshiba netbook, I felt a pinch of doubt. The stickers of atom, windows 7, and Intel were newly placed. The stickers aren’t important to me, because what I value the most was what’s with the specs and I want a genuine version of Windows 7 ultimate. Upon checking the netbook, I found out that the OS isn’t Windows 7 ultimate as advertised! They reformatted it into a Windows 7 starter! I don’t like what I’m feeling but I felt like I was deceived and cheated! I told them that what they’re selling isn’t a genuine version of Windows 7 starter!
The girl who was talking to me let their guy companion to talk to me and tried to get me with his “sales talk”. They probably thought that I don’t know anything about computers! Gosh, computer has become a part of my everyday life and I’ve explored a lot about it, and now here is someone who’s telling me that everything was okay with his product! They even offered me to reformat the netbook again and will turn it back to Windows 7 ultimate. My answer was “NO”. I told them that whatever reformatting they’re going to do, they can’t change the fact that what they’re selling isn’t a genuine version of Windows, and that they obtained it from crack with the use of an activator. If I really want to buy a non-genuine version of Windows, I surely have bought their product and reformat it myself. But no, I don’t want a non genuine version. They kept on convincing me that the OS was genuine, but I explain to them why it’s not and why I don’t want it. The guy also told me that even he didn’t study in college as an IT person, he said he knows it’ll work. Oh man, you’re talking to a girl who studied in IT school, watch out!
Looking at their faces made me an impression that they’re veteran in selling such things. Posting false advertisement on olx.com and trying to make sales, they wasted their time trying to get me. But they can’t because I know what I’m doing, it’s my money after all. I’m pissed off with behaviors like that!
It’s always better to have a second option
Before I left home, I planned to get back right after I got the netbook, but how is that going to happen, those sellers ruined my plan! I’m glad I saved the number of the seller of HP netbook from olx.com and I called her. When she answered, she told me that she can meet me after an hour because she’s still at work. Okay, I waited and met her. I have to take two different LRT ride to get to the place near her place because I was in Pasay while she was in Antipolo. I’ve waited again because the seller came late. Hahaha, That wasn’t new here, remember the so-called “Filipino time”?
She brought me two HP netbooks, the other one was what I saw in her olx ads. I didn’t choose the one with a higher spec because the OS version isn’t what I’m looking for. The seller was easy to negotiate with. I finally decided what to buy. Although the price fits my budget, the specs aren’t high but that’s okay because my main work will be done on my notebook PC.
Things I learned when purchasing on olx.com
- When purchasing pre-owned products, it’s always better to negotiate with sellers nearby so you can check the actual product.
- Always have a second or third option if possible, so when the first one didn’t meet your expectations, it’ll be easy to get in touch with the second seller without needing to go online and browse for the same products again while you’re out for a meet-up.
- Know your seller. Take note of his contact information and check for his other social media accounts where he’s more active.
- Observe how the seller is responding during negotiation.
- Know what you want and what your expectations with the product you’re going to purchase. Scammers are born with sweet tongues, they might invent some ideas or recommendations according to the way you react.
My previous purchases with beauty supplies in olx.com aren’t complicated as my purchase with a netbook this time. Why do some people love to make money but don’t want to give full satisfaction to their buyers? It should be fair. Give your buyer the product he deserves and paid for. Both the seller and buyer will be happy.
