Blogging is just my accidental interest. I don’t have any idea what is it all about, all I want is to build a website of my own. I started building my first site from a drag-and-drop platform which later on leads me to blogging.
I think, making a website is way easier than writing posts for a blog regularly. Sure, you can easily make a website and get back on it if you lost your interest for a while, it only takes coding knowledge and some are purposely made for beginners who don’t know how to code at all. But blogging? Huh, once you start and you don’t know what to write next is the most frustrating. I’m saying this from my experience. I have failed many times because I don’t know what I’m doing and what direction I want my blog to go.
My first blogging failure..
I built my first website in Weebly. As a newbie, I thought I’m doing it right as long as I made it look good. As far as I remember, it only took me an hour or two setting it up because it’s as easy as drag-and-drop. I enjoy doing some html coding there, that was the first time I use html codes outside school after I dropped out my computer programming course. When I’m done with the setup, I put some of my pictures there with my family and it’s supposed to be my personal website. But I don’t feel the fulfilment, something was missing. I made a page where I’m going to blog but, I never have posted any on it. I have no idea what to write then!
I also have no idea what SEO is. I feel like my site is an island in the middle of nowhere, no one will ever find it. I want to reach and be reached by people. I feel discouraged. I gave it up, never look back, and I believe I made the right thing.
I’m stuck after having my first post!
I go for another try then found myself setting up a blog in wordpress.com. I don’t go for putting my pictures first like what I did with Weebly. My purpose for using it is to blog. Yes, to blog! I improved and learned a little from my earlier failure. It’s just not too convenient because I can’t customize the site with something I like compare to self-hosted sites.
When I used wordpress.com, I started to become aware about SEO but, I didn’t know that it’s more complicated than setting up a blog. It was just sad because after posting my very first post, I just stopped! There were some likes and comments on my post from co-wordpress.com users which indicates that I’m reaching some people but I still feel like I was lost then. I don’t know what to write for my next post! Sigh** Seems like my time spent in reading some blogging tips isn’t enough. The site dashboard is also giving me some confusion. So once again, it’s a fail, fail, fail blogging moment! I deleted that blog and moved on. I gave up just that easy.
I realized something after rejection..
Setting up a blogger blog was my next move after wordpress.com. I become more familiar and learned a lot on how to optimize my blog, somehow! I really enjoy coding html in blogger template. I also learned some tricks from Bloggeryard to better optimize it. I even made my site shine in pink and made some Hello Kitty buttons for my blog. I feel a little better but I didn’t realize I’m doing something wrong at the same time!
I get tired of trying to post about myself like what I did with my previous sites so I thought I’ll be good with posting quotations with images, I love quotations! It’s an another fail moment because I discovered that what I’m doing isn’t helping me to craft my own and original contents. I just learned about it when I applied my site for Adsense and got rejected because its contents was more on images and a little to no text. In addition to that, the quotes in the body of my posts are impossible to be called an original contents. That is not what I wanted. All I want is to post acceptable and unique contents that is all mine. Why I didn’t realize it, geez..!
Once again, I lost interest in posting quotes on my blogger blog. I created a Facebook and Google+ page for that site and it’s still getting some followers even I’m not posting quotes anymore. The site is continuously getting hits usually from Google and Bing until now, so sometimes I’m just using it as my trial site. I left it hanging for almost a year now, maybe I’ll just fill it with some more quotes one of these days to keep it alive. I was also thinking of replacing the old posts by writing unique contents in a minimum of 300 words per post, I just don’t know when because that site is not my priority.
Blogger blog is okay but the niche I chose just didn’t work as I expected it things to work out.
Self-hosting my WordPress sites becomes a success— at last!
As my new stepping-stones, I subscribed to newsletters of blogs that talks about blogging tips, WordPress, and SEO so I won’t miss any post and read them one by one before I go to sleep. I learned a lot from WP Beginner, Problogger, Copyblogger, Quick Sprout, Social Media Examiner, Tutsplus, and some more sites that I’m looking up to. Having an account in Black Hat World also opened up my mind about the crucial ways of working on SEO. After failing three times, I realized that I’ll be good on starting with a beauty blog because I always love to share beauty tips with my friends. I feel like I’m ready to take blogging to the next level.
I got my very first own domain name for only $.99/year, this price is really a bargain for those who are just starting up like me. I thought I’m not yet ready to pay for a hosting service so I tried to use a free hosting with no ads. It’s tough because I have to do every setups without support. I’m also not in the right place to complain if the site is always having downtimes, it’s what it takes when you’re using something for free.
I messed up again!
Glad I haven’t posted any yet when things messed up because I broke my site, yeah, blame it to me for being too adventurous with codes. There’s also some problem with the server which I’m not able to get support because they don’t offer it. My head is aching thinking what to do, I really need to do something because I made up my mind that I’m not going to give up blogging this time.
I ended up deleting my blog there and moved it to a paid new host. I don’t have big money to invest for blogging yet so I only purchased a very cheap shared hosting service. It’s good for starters though. I still have complains with this paid host but things get a little easier now, I’m getting support when I broke my site for so many times for being so playful.. Hehe.. I’m more happy self-hosting my sites now, WordPress is something that’s for me. Switching to Genesis framework has also made me feel even better. It fits my needs and my customization desires but there’s more work I have to do to fully customize my two WordPress blogs, I’ll just do it one at a time because writing contents is my priority now.
Blogging isn’t post-and-forget
Finally, I made it! I always try to post at least twice or thrice a week because I can’t post everyday. Blogging isn’t as easy as posting anything with whatever you want because you have to consider some works to craft a unique and SEO optimized content as much as possible. Thinking of blog topics, keyword research, plagiarism check, finding images, and grammar / spelling check are some works that’s slowing me down. In addition to that, I have this site where I write about myself and inspirations so I have to divide my time between posting on my beauty blog and this site. Just because you hit the publish button doesn’t mean you’re done with your blogging work. Posting to social media accounts and building engagements is also another thing to do next.
After my previous failures, I thank myself for not giving up blogging. I can now feel my voice is beginning to reach people because on my Google Analytics account, I’m starting to see visitors from search engines with some of my keywords and from social media platforms on my beauty blog. Its Google webmaster report is also doing good with 160% increase in impressions and 209% increase in clicks. Those cosmetic reviews I made is rocking it!
In addition to that, SEMrush have just sent me a report about my keyword rankings as shown in the above picture. I believe this is a good start because my blog is just 3 months old from the date of my first post. I wish that this new blog of mine will also perform well in the next coming months like my beauty blog did and both of them will grow more. I wish!
